2022 World Cup: Ghana president Nana Akufo-Addo congratulates Black Stars after sealing qualification in Abuja

The Black Stars secured qualification after a 1-1 draw in Abuja against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, progressing to the tournament on the away goal rule.

The President, who was celebrating his birthday today, expressed his pride in the team for their gallant display.

“Warm congratulations to the Senior National Football Team, the Black Stars, for their dogged display in Abuja, and qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. I am very proud of the team’s exploits. They have made the entire nation proud,” he posted on Twitter.

Thomas Partey opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a ferocious strike that Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho failed to keep out.

Ten minutes later, the Super Eagles leveled from a William Trost-Ekong penalty.

However, Ghana secured qualification to the World Cup for the fourth time after the first leg ended in a goalless draw,

Vice President Dr Mahamudud Bawumia also tweeted: “What a gallant display by the Ghana Black Stars! Congratulations to the team for qualifying for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup,” he wrote. 

The Black Stars were the first team on the continent to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
